Two shops on the same street can both use the word bespoke. Only one of them means it. The gap isn’t obvious standing in the doorway, not at first. It shows up later, in how the garment feels after six months of actual wear.
Walking past a shop advertising bkk tailor services rarely tells a buyer, on sight, whether it’s doing genuine bespoke work or dressing up a template job in nicer language.
The Word Bespoke Gets Used Loosely
Made-to-measure and bespoke get used almost interchangeably in signage and sales pitches. Different processes though. Made-to-measure starts from an existing pattern block and adjusts it to fit. Bespoke builds a pattern from scratch, specific to one body. No template being altered along the way.
Both can produce a good-looking suit. But only one can genuinely adapt to an unusual build, a particular posture, or a shoulder sitting a little higher than the other.
What the Canvas Reveals
The honest test is inside the jacket, not on its surface. A fused canvas, glued fabric bonded to the layers beneath it, holds its shape for a while, then starts to bubble or separate. Especially with heat and wear. A floating canvas moves with the body instead, hand or machine stitched rather than glued, and ages by softening rather than warping.
Pinch the lapel. Roll it slightly between two fingers, and it tells most of the story right there. Fused construction feels stiff, uniform. Floating canvas has some give to it, settles back into shape on its own.

Reading the Reviews Correctly
Star ratings alone don’t separate the two categories well. Real bkk tailor work and templated made-to-measure both accumulate plenty of five-star reviews, mostly from first-timers who don’t yet know what to compare against. What’s more telling is whether a review mentions specific fitting details. A second visit. A shoulder adjustment. A fabric substitution handled well. Vague praise like great service and amazing suit shows up everywhere and proves almost nothing.
Price Isn’t the Reliable Signal Either
Tempting to assume the pricier shop is automatically the more legitimate one. It isn’t, not reliably. Some shops charge premium prices for made-to-measure work dressed up in bespoke language. Others doing genuine floating-canvas construction price competitively, simply because their overhead is lower than a shop with a flashier storefront.
Ask directly whether the canvas is fused or floating, and whether the pattern gets rebuilt from measurements or pulled from an existing block. Shops doing real bespoke work tend to answer fast, since it’s the thing that actually sets them apart.
